Statistics Canada (2011), Canada is home to over 600 First Nations reserves and
“more than half (…) do
not have secondary schools” (James, 2016). As a result, 40% of children living on
reserves graduate secondary school, in comparison to non-Indigenous children
and youth, graduating at a rate of 90%. In addition, literacy rates on Canadian reserves are
at an astounding 21%, sitting among the lowest worldwide.
