A line manager “is responsible for achieving an
organization’s main objectives by executing functions such as policy making,
target setting, decision making.” (BusinessDictionary.com,
2018) The key role for line managers is to “ensure that their team functions as required and meet, or
exceed, their goals or targets.” (Acas.org.uk,
2018) As line managers oversee the employees and work with them to help the
business succeed on the day to day running, it is important they are on the
same page and work successfully together.

 

To
effectively manage the people whom they are in charge of, line managers must be
aware that “the first tier of line management have the greatest influence on
staff performance and engagement to their organisation.” (Acas.org.uk, 2018) This means line managers must be careful at all
times to ensure they are effectively motivating and encouraging their staff to
allow them to reach their full potential and for the company to get the most
out of them. “Managers who help create a supportive, nurturing work environment
are able to get the most from their staff members” (Roberthalf.co.uk, 2018) It is imperative managers have a healthy
working relationship with their staff in order for them to be able to
successfully work well together, especially in team situations.

“A strong leader builds solid
relationships with everyone…it’s about building relationships based on respect”
(Momentagroup.com, 2018) Staff members respond best to managers who
help guide them and support them through their work. To effectively manage
their people, they must help them be as happy and comfortable in their work
environment. If they trust their mangers they will respond better to their
direction and want to be as focused as possible. Being a leader is important, it can
allow staff to feel grounded and help them understand their work and motivate
employees to want to do more. Line managers can help staff in many ways, for
instance “giving staff regular feedback so that good work is recognised and
support is given for improvements when necessary” (Acas.org.uk, 2018) can help show them good work is
rewarded and praised, and they are assisted by their mangers to continuously
help them improve and guide them further to succeed.

 

Helping employees
feel safe and secure at their workplace is another key role for line managers.

“Managers have a duty of care to their staff and therefore must take all
reasonable steps to ensure the health, safety and wellbeing of their staff” (Acas.org.uk,
2018) this ensures staff
feel mentally and physically secure at their place of work, and it is really
important line mangers are able to give staff the equipment they need to do
their work, which could be the right tools or the right training so they
understand and can complete their work. “Empower
your employee with a sense of well-being” (Smallbusiness.chron.com,
2018) Ensuring they are healthy and mentally strong is important, as employees
are fundamental to any business, without them the business would not be able to
operate, so ensuring they are healthy and looked after is key.

 

Motivation
is an important skill for line managers because a “the manager controls the key
environmental factors necessary to motivate employees.” (The Balance, 2018) Motivating staff helps them feel challenged
and driven to work hard for the company, and want to stay at the company, which
is important as an unmotivated workforce may want to leave the business, and as
labour turnover is costly to any company it is important for line managers to
reduce this as much as possible. Maslow’s hierarchy of needs helps show how
each individual is motivated in different ways, as they are on different levels
of the pyramid. “A business should
therefore offer different incentives to workers in order to help them fulfil
each need in turn and progress up the hierarchy” (tutor2u, 2018) Understanding what motivates your employees can
help line managers offer different incentives to each employee, as they see
relevant, after understanding each of their needs. By helping fulfil these
needs, staff will feel motivated by their line manager, and motivated to work
harder for the company, as they are being rewarded by having their needs met.

Seminar 5 (see appendix) helped build understanding, as seeing the example of
RBS can put reward schemes into reality.

 

 

Personal
reflection of my skills and areas for improvement

 

I have learnt a lot in the people
management seminars about myself, and how I possess skills that line managers
do, showing I am capable of becoming a manager in the future, and how that
position could help me develop even more skills, including team work,
communication and leadership. Leadership is an important skill for line mangers
and I feel I have learnt to become a leader in previous modules, by working in
a team and choosing to lead my team successfully to ensure we all achieved
grades we were proud of. However I know there is always room to improve. In
particular, Seminars 1 and 2 (see appendix) taught me the value of leadership
for line managers and how this skill will be useful for me to develop, mostly
through how effective people management is, and an overview on how line
managers need to be the driving force for people management in a business.

 

Through working at my local auction
house for over 4 years I have learnt the importance of creating positive
working relationships with co-workers and my managers. The owner was always
pleased with my work and has continued to ask me back when I am home from university
to be able to work on sale days. Sale days can be stressful and busy especially
dealing with customers, however I have learnt great leadership skills after
being delegated to run the office in sale days, having full responsibility to
take calls, deal with customers queries and help customers pay for their items,
either in person or on the phone. The majority of these sale days I spent in
the office alone being solely responsible for the running of the office,
however in occasion I was joined by another person who I would use to help me
to overcome the busy days as there was constantly lots of people needing
assistance. By having another person I would show my leadership skills to
delegate work to them, help them with any queries and work alongside them in
every way I can to ensure us both success.

 

With skills such as leadership and
employee relations I can always still improve, through every task, assignment
or job I do as each new task it is important to create a good working
relationship with every new person I encounter, and work with. A particular
area I would like to develop is my interaction and relationship with new
people, and improving this will help me communicate better in my work. I shall
measure this by trying to meet 5 new people on every module, this is to broaden
my abilities to communicate with new people and also help my confidence
interacting and working with people I haven’t done so before. Meeting new
people can improve my connections, as in future it will be helpful having as
many fellow business students as friends so we can help each other in our work
lives after university.
