Abortion

 Abortion
is the termination of a pregnancy , accompanied by , resulting in, or closely
followed by the death of an embryo or fetus .Abortion  has been one of the
biggest controversies of all time. The National abortion federation
organization surveyed that between the 1880s and 1973, abortion was illegal in
all or most U.S. states, and many women died or had serious medical problems as
a result. Many leading countries , with the exception of India and China , do
not have legal abortions (Jones,2005). A woman should be able to chose to have
an abortion because if she becomes pregnant, the decision to make the
sacrifices of motherhood should be based on her .Access to legal abortion gives
a pregnant woman the option to decide, and the countries where it is
illegal , it is the leading cause of maternal death.

Firstly, abortion should remain a legal option for women as
the government should not interfere with a women’s body, illegal abortion
results in an increased number of fatalities, and there is no conclusive
evidence that a fetus equals a human and deserves equal rights. Susan Dudley published
in National abortion federation, an article Abortion facts  that  “An
estimated 68,000 women worldwide die each year from unsafe abortions”(2006,para
4).The number of women who die due to unsafe abortions is shockingly high when
abortion is declared illegal by the government. Secondly, legal abortions are one
of the safest procedures in contemporary practises. Legalizing abortion has
improved the overall health and survival of women, and that of their
families(Arthur,2010). Without exception, every country that has legalized
abortion has seen dramatic decreases in deaths and serious complications due to
unsafe abortion. The case fatality case is less than 1 death per 100,000
procedures(Jones,2005). Women should have access to legal and safe
abortion services without government interference to improve their health.

Laws banning abortion violates a women’s right to life and health.
If a woman feels that an abortion is really needed, she will get it done
whether it is legal or not. Firstly, women have abortions for a variety of
reasons, but in general they choose abortion because a pregnancy at that time
is in some way is wrong for them. The national abortion federation states
that, “Calculating abortion rates, older
teenagers and young adults have the highest abortion rates, while women younger
than 15 and older than 35 have the lowest” (2005, para4). Many of these young
women have little understanding of their bodies and have begun having sexual
intercourse before knowing about ways to prevent pregnancy. Secondly, women should
be able to get abortions done without the fear of condemnation or judgement and
that is only possible if it is legalised. When teens know that health care
providers are forced by law to tell their parents before providing services,
they are less willing to get health care related to sexual activity. An article
in the Canadian point of view: Abortion states “It is proven
that even where abortion is
illegal, women will terminate unwanted pregnancies. The methods used under such
circumstances are extremely dangerous, as illegal abortions performed either by unlicensed persons or by
pregnant women themselves can result in infections, haemorrhaging, future
infertility , or even death”(2017, para 2). If abortion is legalized it does
not stop women from any background irrespective whether they are poor or
rich getting it done. It was stated in Canadian point of view: Abortion “Where
abortion is illegal, women
requiring the termination of a pregnancy may be forced to pay premium rates for
illegal abortion services. Still,
only wealthy women are able to afford to terminate pregnancy this way, so more
poor women are forced into motherhood or into trying to induce abortion” (2017, para 9).Where abortion is illegal, the rates are
higher which cannot be afforded by every women, so those who cant afford it are
left with the option of either going through with the pregnancy or trying to
self induce abortion.

A fetus cannot live outside a
woman’s body and consequently be considered part of her body. Firstly, people
have the right to make their own decisions about their bodies, so women have
the right to decide whether to have an abortion or not. Joyce Arthur in his
article Personhood: Isa fetus a human
being stated that, “A fetus is not a
separate individual—it lives inside a pregnant woman and depends on her for its
growth. In fact, the biological definition of “parasite” fits the
fetal mode of growth precisely, especially since pregnancy causes a major upset
to a woman’s body, just like a parasite does to its host”(2001,para16).A fetus
cannot be thought of as an individual human as it resides inside a female’s body
and does more harm to her than good.  According to authors Lambridge Melanie and
Tunstall Lee as stated in their article Point: to be pro-choice is to be
pro-liberty, “The stigma attached to abortion is due to the rights of the foetus by those who believe that a
fertilized egg is a person, abortion
is considered murder. Criminalizing abortion
favours the opinion that the foetus is a person with rights” (2017,para2). The
option of abortion suggests that
women are free and responsible agents who are able to execute their own moral
decisions. This is necessary if woman are responsible agents who are able to
execute their own moral decisions. This is necessary if women are to establish
identities separate from that of simply “mother.”

In conclusion, the legal and accessible option of abortion
gives women the freedom to choose whether or not to reproduce. Without this
choice, women’s rights to security, health and choice are compromised. In turn,
this makes women unequal to men because they cannot pursue happiness and
prosperity with the same freedoms. By rendering legalization of abortion, it
helps women in the long run to establish identities
separate from that of simply “mother.”
Moreover, the legality of abortion creates a value judgment on women’s identity
in connection with motherhood. Legal abortion allows women to choose whether or
not and when they identify with maternal obligation. By contrast, illegal
abortion forces women’s identities to be determined by an obligation to
reproduce.
